Wintering Your Caravan or Motorhome: Keep It Happy All Winter!

Caravan and motorhome parked in a snowy winter campsite – KamperBitz wintering tips
KamperBitz wintering tips

When the temperature drops and the roads get frosty, it’s time to start thinking about wintering your caravan or motorhome. Whether you’re packing it away until spring or planning a few crisp winter getaways, a little bit of preparation now can save you a world of trouble later.

Here’s our KamperBitz guide to keeping your pride and joy in top shape through the chilly months ❄️

1️⃣ Drain Down Your Water System

This is the big one!

Frozen water pipes or a cracked water heater can cause major damage (and major repair bills). Empty your fresh and waste water tanks, open all taps (including the shower), and run your pump until no more water comes through.

👉 Tip: Don’t forget the toilet flush system and any inline water filters!

If you’d rather not do it yourself, we can carry out a Winter Drain Down Service for you — professionally and safely.

2️⃣ Charge & Protect Your Batteries

Leisure batteries don’t like being left to go flat — especially in cold weather. Either keep it on a trickle charger or remove and store it somewhere dry and frost-free.

Motorhome owners should also keep the vehicle battery topped up — a quick run every couple of weeks keeps everything alive and ready for spring.

At KamperBitz, we can test your batteries and charging systems to make sure they’re winter-ready 🔋

3️⃣ Ventilation & Damp Prevention

Condensation is the silent enemy!

Leave internal cupboard doors open, remove bedding and soft furnishings, and pop in a few moisture traps. If your van has a roof vent, leave it slightly open (or fit vent covers) to allow airflow.

4️⃣ Heating & Appliances

If you’re using your van over winter, now’s a great time to give your Truma or Alde heating system a check-up.

A well-maintained heater means no nasty surprises on a cold night! We’re official Truma and Alde service partners, so we can test, service, and repair your system to manufacturer standards.

5️⃣ Exterior Care

Give the exterior a good clean to remove grime, salt and debris. Waxing your caravan or motorhome helps protect it from the elements, and don’t forget to check your seals for cracks or damage.

👉 Cover it with a breathable cover — not a tarp — to allow moisture to escape.

6️⃣ Keep an Eye on Tyres & Security

If it’s parked up for the season, move it occasionally to avoid flat spots on tyres. Inflate them slightly above normal pressure and fit wheel locks or a hitch lock for extra peace of mind.

7️⃣ Bonus Tip: Book a Habitation Check Early

Many owners wait until spring, meaning workshops get very busy!

Booking your Annual Habitation Check or Caravan Service over winter means shorter waiting times and peace of mind knowing everything’s sorted before your first trip of 2026.

Final Thoughts

A little TLC now will keep your van happy, healthy and ready to roll when the sun returns 🌤️

Whether you’re tucking your caravan up for winter or preparing your motorhome for year-round adventures, KamperBitz can help with everything from winter drain downs and servicing to Truma & Alde maintenance.
